Many things associated with Japan first appeared during medieval times where they played a big part in society. The religions, specifically Shintoism, were greatly influenced by the elements and natural resources of Japan. Its topography dictated where and how its people earned their livings, and how its climate influenced agriculture and living. Japan’s natural elements all determined how they lived, e.g. they were very religious about cleansing themselves with water and constantly being pure. The land is very mountainous and not suitable for farming, so many people relied on fishing from the surrounding oceans as their main food resource. Many of these factors are still relevant in modern Japanese society.
