How was Japan, which was in civil strife, unified by Nobunaga, Hideyori and Ieyassu?
Japan was unified at the end of the Sengoku period by 3 men who bought a close to the Warring States: Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyori and Tokugawa Ieyassu. They ushered in a prolonged era of peace and sustainability through a series of military campaigns together with their intuitive and positive attitudes towards Japan’s future, to then create a single unified government. All 3 men were outstanding politicians and military commanders who formed alliances that enabled them to conquer and unify Japan. Their goals were all similar in wanting to establish power over as much territory possible.
It was about gaining control of the contemporary system, one method being regulated by Ieyassu that consolidated his power after redistributing conquered lands among the daimyo to spend every other year in Edo. This was known as alternate attendance and was very successful in branching out different clans throughout Japan and positively enhanced the position of the merchants in society as their businesses were growing and expanding due to the frequent travel between cities. It helped keep the Daimyo lords under control in power and finance. The efforts of all 3 unifiers shaped Japan that had been in expansive civil conflict, to a country that was peaceful and sustainable through their campaigns and methods to do so. (208 words)
